Laser treatments for pigment disorders on the body

A radiant, even complexion is considered a sign of health and youthfulness. But the reality is often different: pigmentation disorders, those small or larger dark spots on the skin, can disrupt our appearance and affect our well-being. While they often get the most attention on the face, pigmentation spots are just as common on the hands, arms, chest and back, where they are particularly visible in summer or when wearing light clothing.

At LIVION, we know how many people are concerned about achieving an even skin tone. That is why we are now focusing intensively on the topic of laser treatments for pigmentation disorders on the body. We explain the causes of these skin changes, how to recognise them and, above all, which effective, modern laser methods we offer in our practice to help you achieve flawless skin.

What lies behind pigment disorders? The causes of discoloration

Pigment disorders, known technically as hyperpigmentation, are the result of excessive production of the skin pigment melanin. Melanin is a protective mechanism in our body that is produced by specialised cells called melanocytes to protect the skin from UV radiation.

However, if this process becomes locally unbalanced, dark spots form. The most common types of pigmentation disorders on the body are:

  • Solar lentigines (age spots or sunspots): These are the most common forms. They develop due to years of cumulative UV exposure. They are usually sharply defined, brownish, and occur primarily on sun-exposed areas such as the backs of the hands, forearms, and chest.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): These dark spots develop as a result of inflammation or injury to the skin (e.g., after acne, eczema, burns, or aggressive peels). They are often irregularly shaped and can appear anywhere on the body.
  • Melasma: Although it often appears on the face, it can also occur on the neck or forearms. Melasma is typically triggered by hormonal changes (e.g., pregnancy, birth control pills) in combination with sun exposure.

Are pigment disorders medically problematic?

First, the good news: most pigment disorders are purely cosmetic in nature and usually harmless. Age spots and sun spots are generally harmless.

However, careful examination is essential! In rare cases, dark, irregular spots can also be precursors or early forms of skin cancer (e.g. malignant melanomas). Therefore, the following applies:

Always have new or changing pigmentation examined by an experienced dermatologist. At LIVION, we carry out a thorough skin analysis to ensure that the spots are benign before we begin any aesthetic treatment. Your skin health is always our top priority.

Prevention: The best protection for your body

Before we talk about treatment, it is important to emphasise the most important thing: prevention is key in the fight against pigment spots. As UV radiation is the main trigger, there is a lot you can do yourself to prevent new spots from forming:

  • Consistent sun protection: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF 30 or 50) daily, all year round, on exposed areas of the body. Remember to reapply after swimming or heavy sweating.
  • Sun protection clothing: Protect sensitive areas such as hands and décolletage with additional clothing, headwear or UV-protective textiles.
  • Avoid midday sun: Reduce direct exposure between 10 am and 4 pm, when UV radiation is at its highest.

Innovative laser technology: The solutions at LIVION

If pigment disorders already exist and you want a more even complexion, the most effective method is to specifically destroy the excess melanin. This is where our modern laser and light systems come into play.

Laser treatments use the principle of selective photothermolysis: highly concentrated light is emitted at exactly the wavelength that is optimally absorbed by melanin (the dark pigment). This absorption generates heat for a short time, breaking down the melanin deposits into tiny particles. These particles are then removed by the body's own immune system.

At LIVION, we rely on advanced technologies that are also suitable for treating larger areas of the body:

1. Laser Assisted Dr.UG Delivery (LADD) with Erbium YAG Laser

LADD is an innovative treatment concept that combines the advantages of laser treatment with the targeted introduction of highly effective ingredients and is offered by us at LIVION.

We use the Erbium YAG laser in a fractional setting. This means that the laser creates thousands of microscopic but precise channels in the skin, while the surrounding tissue remains intact.

The laser energy gently removes superficial, pigmented skin layers and stimulates skin renewal. The opened microchannels allow highly concentrated active ingredients, such as tranexamic acid or brightening serums, which normally have difficulty penetrating deeper skin layers, to be optimally introduced. These active ingredients act directly on the melanocytes and reduce pigment production.

This combination is particularly effective for larger areas of pigmentation disorders on the body, as it not only acts on the surface, but also specifically influences melanin formation in the deeper layers and improves the overall skin structure. It is an excellent method for treating sun damage and pigmentation spots on the décolleté or arms.

2. Targeted laser therapy for pigment removal

In addition to the LADD method, we offer general laser therapies, e.g. with CO2 lasers, which specifically target the destruction of excess melanin.

State-of-the-art laser systems are used to focus high-energy light on the pigment disorder. The melanin absorbs the energy, causing it to break down into microscopic particles. These particles are then rejected and excreted over the course of the next few days and weeks through natural skin processes.

This type of treatment is fast, precise and ideal for dark sun spots or age spots on the hands, arms and other parts of the body. The surrounding skin is treated with the utmost care. Several treatments are often necessary to achieve optimal and lasting results.

How does a treatment at LIVION work?

If you choose to have your pigmentation disorders treated at LIVION, we place the greatest emphasis on an individual therapy tailored to your needs.

  1. The initial consultation: First, we conduct a thorough skin analysis. We clarify the type of pigmentation disorder, its causes, and rule out any medical risks. You tell us your wishes and expectations.
  2. The treatment plan: Based on the diagnosis, we will create your customized plan. For optimal results, several sessions spaced a few weeks apart are usually necessary.
  3. The treatment: Thanks to modern equipment, the treatment itself is usually quick and virtually painless. If necessary, we apply a numbing cream beforehand.
  4. Aftercare: Immediately after treatment, the treated areas may be slightly reddened and the spots may temporarily darken (a good sign that the pigments have reacted). The most important step in aftercare is consistent, daily UV protection to protect the treated areas and prevent recurrence.
