What is meant by gynecomastia treatment?

Male breast treatment at Livion in Hamburg

Gynecomastia, commonly referred to as the undesired enlarged male breast, describes an excessive accumulation of fatty and glandular tissue in one or both male breasts. As a result, the chest appears larger and takes on a more feminine appearance. Gynecomastia treatment, also known as male breast reduction, is among the most common aesthetic procedures performed in men. It involves the removal of excess fat and glandular tissue from the chest. The goal of the treatment is to restore a normal male chest contour and provide the patient with greater self-confidence.

How is a gynecomastia treatment performed?

Gentle and effective male breast reduction

In gynecomastia treatment, a small incision is usually made in the areola, and the excess glandular breast tissue is gently and with minimal bleeding removed. If the patient also suffers from an increased accumulation of fat in the chest, the removal of glandular tissue is combined with liposuction. In the case of pseudogynecomastia (a male breast composed only of fat – without glandular tissue) with firm skin, liposuction alone is sufficient, performed with a very fine cannula. In some cases, we also use an intraoperative laser to tighten the treated area directly. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia and typically lasts 1–2 hours. After the operation, you can usually return home the same day following a short recovery period.

What you need to consider after the procedure

Aftercare of gynecomastia treatment

Our practice team will support you not only before and during but also after the surgery. You will receive prescriptions for the necessary medications as well as post-operative instructions in advance as part of your treatment folder. Compression garments should be worn day and night for about 2–4 weeks. This minimizes the risk of fluid accumulation (seroma), bleeding (hematoma formation), and wound healing complications. In addition, compression therapy plays a crucial role in the success of the overall result. Sports and physical activities should be avoided for 4–6 weeks.

FAQ

The most frequently asked questions about gynecomastia treatment

Gynecomastia refers to the increased development of fatty and/or glandular tissue in the male breast. This can cause the chest to appear more feminine, which can be a significant psychological burden for many men. Depending on the cause, a distinction is made between true gynecomastia (enlarged glandular tissue) and so-called pseudogynecomastia (increased fat tissue without glandular involvement).

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Through a small incision at the edge of the areola, excess glandular tissue is removed. If excess fat is present, liposuction is performed in combination. In cases of pseudogynecomastia, liposuction alone is often sufficient. If necessary, the treated area can be tightened using a special laser technique during the operation. The procedure takes approximately one to two hours, and patients can usually leave the clinic on the same day.

The treatment is suitable for men who have a persistently enlarged chest, whether due to genetic, hormonal, or weight-related reasons. Surgery is particularly recommended when diet and exercise do not produce a noticeable change.

After surgery, wearing a special compression vest for two to four weeks is required. This supports healing and ensures a smooth, even result. Physical rest is essential in the first few days, and sports should be avoided for four to six weeks.
