What is breast augmentation with implants?

Breast surgery with implants in Hamburg at LIVION

Breast augmentation with implants is one of the most popular procedures in plastic and aesthetic surgery. The procedure aims to enlarge the breast with the help of an implant and adjust the shape of the breast. At Livion, we only use high-quality, certified implants from the German brand POLYTECH, which are known for their high quality standards. In addition to breast augmentation with implants, we also offer hybrid breast augmentation. In this procedure, the breasts are enlarged using implants and the patient's own fat, which can ensure a very natural result.

A variety of implant options for your breast augmentation

At LIVION in Hamburg, you can choose between two main types of implants for your breast augmentation: round and anatomical (teardrop-shaped) implants. Round implants are evenly shaped and provide balanced volume throughout the breast, creating a fuller and more pronounced décolleté. Anatomical implants, on the other hand, are designed to mimic the natural shape of the breast, with most of the volume concentrated in the lower third. This results in a natural and softly contoured appearance.

At LIVION, we exclusively use certified premium implants from the German brand POLYTECH, known for their exceptional safety and quality standards. These implants are available in a variety of sizes and surface textures, allowing us to find the ideal solution tailored to your unique body shape and aesthetic goals.

What you need to know about the procedure

Procedure for breast augmentation with implants

In a breast augmentation with implants, the incision is usually made in the inframammary fold. However, access can also be achieved through the armpit or around the areola. The implant is typically placed under the chest muscle. Afterwards, the wound is closed in multiple layers and a compression bra is applied. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about 2 hours. After the surgery, you will stay in the clinic for one night.

Important information for optimal recovery

Follow-up care after breast augmentation with implants

Our practice team will provide you with comprehensive support after the operation. Before the procedure, you will receive a personal treatment folder with prescriptions and instructions for the period after the operation. Immediately after the procedure, we will fit you with a compression bra and an elastic bandage for the first 24 hours. You should wear the compression bra day and night for approximately 6-8 weeks. This ensures that the implants remain in place. For this reason, it should only be removed for showering. A Stuttgart belt may be necessary; we will provide you with the relevant instructions. Sports activities, swimming and saunas should be avoided for 6-8 weeks. Our goal is to provide you with optimal support throughout your entire aftercare period.

FAQ

The most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation with implants

Round breast implants are uniformly circular, providing even fullness throughout the breast. Anatomical implants, on the other hand, have a natural teardrop shape that closely mimics the contour of a natural breast. While round implants tend to create more pronounced curves, anatomical implants deliver a subtler, more natural look. The choice between the two depends on the patient’s aesthetic goals and individual anatomy.

Pressure sensitivity is normal for a few days after surgery, as the implants are placed beneath the pectoral muscle. Pain is typically most intense two to four days post-operation. Depending on individual pain tolerance, pain medication is usually no longer needed after about a week. To prevent the implants from shifting, a supportive bra and, in some cases, a compression belt are applied. These must be worn continuously for four to six weeks and can be somewhat uncomfortable.

The results are immediately visible, although the breasts will initially be firm and swollen. Over the following weeks, they will soften and take on a more natural appearance. Scars may take 6–12 months to fully heal and become barely noticeable.

Physical rest depends on the extent of the procedure and the individual’s constitution. A two-week break is generally recommended to regain strength. During this time, short walks are highly encouraged to maintain circulation and reduce the risk of thrombosis. It is especially important, following breast augmentation with implants, to avoid any activities that require raising the arms above 90° (e.g., washing your hair).

Exercise and sauna use should be avoided for approximately 6–8 weeks. Swimming in the sea is generally safe after 10–14 days, while chlorinated pools should be avoided for about a month. Longer walks are fine after one to two weeks. Please note that excessive sweating on the wound, such as during sauna sessions or intense exercise, can potentially impair the healing process.

You should also avoid tanning beds and sunbathing for approximately six weeks. UV exposure can negatively impact the scar, making it significantly more noticeable.

It is important not to take blood-thinning painkillers (e.g., Aspirin®) if you experience pain. Instead, take medications containing ibuprofen (up to 600 mg twice daily), which provide both pain relief and anti-swelling effects. Additionally, we recommend Traumeel S or bromelain tablets. You can also apply cold packs to the chest and sleep with your upper body elevated.

Many people believe that implants must be replaced after 10 years. This is not true. As long as you experience no issues and annual check-ups show no complications, there is no need to replace the implants.

For most women, breastfeeding with implants is not an issue, as the implant is usually placed under the pectoral muscle, which preserves the milk ducts. If you have any concerns about whether your ability to breastfeed could be affected, please raise them during your consultation.

The cost of breast augmentation varies greatly and depends on the type of implants, the surgical technique chosen, the standard of the clinic, and the length of stay. In Germany, the total cost is usually between €5,000 and €9,000 or more. Since this is generally a purely cosmetic procedure, the costs are not covered by statutory or private health insurance. Coverage is only possible in very rare medically indicated cases (e.g., extreme deformities or after breast cancer).
