How is a chin correction performed?

A minor surgical procedure for reducing or augmenting the chin

A chin correction is a minor surgical procedure to reduce or augment the chin. At LIVION in Hamburg, the following methods are used for chin shaping:

For surgical chin augmentation, an implant is inserted either through the oral cavity or via an external incision and fixed to the periosteum. Instead of a silicone implant, a bioimplant made of cartilage or autologous fat can also be used.

For surgical chin reduction, the chin contour is corrected by carefully removing bone. This can be done through an incision inside the lower lip or an external incision beneath the chin, followed by bone removal using a surgical drill.

All procedures are performed under general anesthesia. The duration depends on the type of chin correction. In both cases, patients can usually leave the clinic on the same day.

What you need to bear in mind after the procedure

Aftercare following chin correction surgery

No scar will be visible after incisions made inside the mouth. However, meticulous oral hygiene is very important to prevent infection after chin correction. For incisions made outside the mouth, the scar will run below the chin. Swelling, bruising and tension are to be expected afterwards, but these can be minimised by cooling. In the first few days after chin correction, we recommend that you sleep with your upper body elevated and only eat soft, mushy foods. You should also refrain from strenuous physical activity, sunbathing and smoking for two to three weeks. After about a week, the stitches will be removed from any external incisions.

FAQ

The most frequently asked questions about chin correction

A chin correction, also called chin surgery or genioplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at harmonizing facial contours. Whether the chin is recessed or prominent, targeted augmentation, reduction, or reshaping of the chin can significantly balance the proportions of the face.

Chin correction is suitable for men and women who perceive their facial profile as unbalanced, for example due to a small, recessed, or overly prominent chin. The goal is an aesthetically harmonious overall facial appearance with smooth transitions between the forehead, nose, lips, and chin.

Depending on the desired result, the chin can either be augmented with an implant (e.g., silicone or autologous fat) or reduced by selectively removing bone. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes 1–2 hours. Access is either inconspicuously through the inside of the mouth or via a small incision under the chin.

If the incision is made inside the mouth, no visible scars remain. For an external approach, the scar is discreetly located beneath the chin and is barely noticeable once healed.

After the procedure, swelling and a feeling of tension are normal. Cooling, sleeping with the head elevated, and a soft diet support healing. Smoking, sunbathing, and physical exertion should be avoided for about two to three weeks. For an external approach, sutures are usually removed after approximately one week.
