Chin correction

A chin correction, also called chin surgery or genioplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at harmonizing facial contours. Whether the chin is recessed or prominent, targeted augmentation, reduction, or reshaping of the chin can significantly balance the proportions of the face.

Chin correction is suitable for men and women who perceive their facial profile as unbalanced, for example due to a small, recessed, or overly prominent chin. The goal is an aesthetically harmonious overall facial appearance with smooth transitions between the forehead, nose, lips, and chin.

Depending on the desired result, the chin can either be augmented with an implant (e.g., silicone or autologous fat) or reduced by selectively removing bone. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes 1–2 hours. Access is either inconspicuously through the inside of the mouth or via a small incision under the chin.

If the incision is made inside the mouth, no visible scars remain. For an external approach, the scar is discreetly located beneath the chin and is barely noticeable once healed.

After the procedure, swelling and a feeling of tension are normal. Cooling, sleeping with the head elevated, and a soft diet support healing. Smoking, sunbathing, and physical exertion should be avoided for about two to three weeks. For an external approach, sutures are usually removed after approximately one week.

Depending on the initial assessment, chin correction can be achieved using an implant, autologous fat transfer or bone reshaping of the chin. The aim is to harmoniously adjust the projection of the chin and the facial proportions. The most suitable method depends on the individual’s anatomy and the desired outcome.

The healing time varies depending on the type of procedure. Swelling and a feeling of tightness may occur in the first few days, but these will gradually subside. Many patients are able to resume social activities after about one to two weeks. Full healing and the final result take several weeks to develop.

Chin correction can visually balance the proportions of the facial profile by adjusting the projection of the chin. This can make the interplay between the nose, lips and chin appear more harmonious. The exact change depends on the patient’s initial anatomy and the chosen treatment method.

In some cases, minor chin corrections can be achieved using non-surgical methods such as fillers. However, these procedures generally only alter the volume of the chin, not its bony structure. For significant deformities, surgical chin correction is usually the more permanent option, as it involves direct manipulation of the bone or the use of implants.

Chin correction is often considered as part of a comprehensive profile analysis, alongside rhinoplasty. Both procedures can help to create a more harmonious facial silhouette, as the nose and chin have a significant influence on the profile. Whether a combination is appropriate depends on the individual’s anatomy and the desired aesthetic outcome.
