What is lipedema treatment?

Liposuction for lipedema at LIVION in Hamburg

Lipedema is a chronic disorder of fat tissue distribution that occurs almost exclusively in women. It can affect the legs, hips, and arms symmetrically. The feet and hands are not affected. Lipedema treatment involves the surgical removal of diseased fatty tissue, i.e., liposuction, as a long-term relief measure. The body proportions become more harmonious again and, at the same time, the tendency to develop edema and hematomas is reduced. At our practice in Hamburg, we take the time to provide you with individual and detailed advice in a non-binding consultation. At LIVION, we have already treated numerous women with lipedema and have been able to achieve significant physical and visual improvements.

How is lipedema liposuction performed?

Innovative liposuction using gentle BodyTite technology

Liposuction can be performed using a particularly gentle, specialized technique on the hips, legs, and arms. This method causes less trauma to the treated tissue and lymphatic vessels compared with other techniques. For a skin-tightening effect and to stimulate collagen production, the BodyTite device is used. It is especially suitable when an area needs to be treated with maximum preservation of surrounding tissue and when liposuction alone would not provide sufficient tightening.

The procedure is generally well tolerated and is performed under general anesthesia, typically lasting between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the area being treated. After the operation, patients usually stay in the clinic for one day and are cared for attentively by our team.

What you need to bear in mind after the procedure

Aftercare for lipedema treatment

Immediately after the operation, we recommend wearing a special compression garment for approximately six weeks to promote the healing process. We also strongly recommend lymphatic drainage therapy. We use self-dissolving suture material to close the wounds during the operation. This means that the stitches do not need to be removed. After the operation, you may experience mild to moderate pain, fluid retention, swelling, and bruising. You can resume your everyday and professional activities after about 1-2 weeks. Refrain from sporting activities for 4-6 weeks.

FAQ

The most frequently asked questions about liposuction for lipedema

Lipedema is a chronic fat distribution disorder that affects almost exclusively women. It usually appears symmetrically on the legs and/or arms. Typical symptoms include pain, tenderness, and a feeling of tightness in the affected areas. Diet and exercise have little effect on the condition, which can be particularly distressing for many patients.

Conservative measures, such as compression garments or manual lymphatic drainage, can temporarily relieve symptoms but do not provide a long-term improvement. Liposuction allows the pathologically altered fat tissue in the affected areas to be selectively removed. Many patients experience significant physical relief and a noticeable improvement in quality of life.

Surgical treatment of lipedema is carried out through liposuction. At LIVION, we use a particularly tissue-friendly technique, complemented by the BodyTite system for skin tightening. The procedure usually takes 2 to 4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Afterwards, patients stay in the clinic for one day for observation.

BodyTite is an innovative method that simultaneously removes fat, tightens the skin, and stimulates collagen production. This technique is especially suitable for lipedema, as it protects surrounding tissue and lymphatic vessels—important for a safe and effective treatment.

After the procedure, a special compression garment should be worn for approximately 6 weeks. We also recommend manual lymphatic drainage to support healing. Physical rest is important: avoid sports for 4 to 6 weeks, while normal daily activities are usually possible after 1 to 2 weeks.

Liposuction for lipedema leads to a visible harmonization of body proportions, reduces the tendency for swelling and bruising, and relieves the body both physically and mentally. Many of our patients report significantly improved well-being and self-esteem.
