Breast reduction

A full, large breast is not a blessing for every woman. A disproportionately large breast can significantly impact quality of life and cause physical discomfort. Many patients visit our clinic suffering from macromastia. They often feel self-conscious when looking in the mirror, undressing in front of their partner, or visiting a swimming pool or sauna. Large breasts can also lead to health issues, such as neck and shoulder pain, muscle tension, or posture problems.

A breast reduction, also called reduction mammoplasty, is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures worldwide. At our Hamburg clinic, we take the time to provide individualized and comprehensive consultations, ensuring that each patient receives a treatment plan tailored to their needs.

What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction at LIVION in Hamburg

A breast reduction is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and breast tissue are removed. A breast reduction, often combined with a breast lift, is particularly suitable for women with overly large breasts, known as macromastia. Correcting body proportions and removing sagging tissue can significantly enhance self-confidence and improve quality of life.

How does a breast reduction procedure work?

A harmonious breast shape and your wishes are the focus

Our goal is a harmonious breast shape that perfectly matches your proportions and meets your individual wishes. To ensure you feel completely comfortable in your body after the treatment, we will work with you in advance to define the desired changes in detail. To ensure the symmetry of the décolleté, we first draw planning lines and points on the skin. These mark the position of the new inframammary fold and the position of the incision. During the breast reduction under general anesthesia, excess and sagging tissue is carefully removed, and the remaining area is tightened if desired. Learn more about breast lifts here.

In most cases, so-called drains are inserted during the operation. These drain blood and tissue fluid that can accumulate in the wound cavity in front of the pectoral muscle and behind the newly formed breast. These drains are usually removed after a maximum of two days, and the incision edges are secured with special wound dressings. For optimal healing, we also apply a supportive dressing. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically lasts 3-4 hours. After the operation, you will stay in the hospital overnight.

What you need to bear in mind after the procedure

Aftercare following breast reduction surgery

Our practice team will support you not only before and during, but also after your breast reduction. You will visit us regularly within the first 14 days so that we can monitor the results and the healing process. We use self-dissolving suture material to close the wounds during the operation. This means that the stitches do not need to be removed. You should wear the support bra for around 6 weeks and follow our scar treatment programme to ensure optimal wound healing. We will explain this to you in detail during your personal pre-operative consultation. After breast reduction surgery, it is particularly important to take it easy for the following 2-3 weeks. You can usually return to work after about 7-10 days, and sporting activities are possible after about 6 weeks.

FAQ

The most frequently asked questions about breast reduction surgery

A breast reduction, also called a mammaplasty or reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure in which excess breast tissue and skin are removed. The goal is to reduce breast size, harmonize its shape, and relieve both physical discomfort and psychological strain. Especially in cases of macromastia, or excessively large breasts, the surgery can significantly improve quality of life.

A breast reduction can alleviate physical discomfort such as neck, back, or shoulder pain. It can also reduce psychological stress caused by embarrassment, limited mobility, or difficulty finding suitable clothing.

The procedure typically lasts three to four hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Excess tissue is removed, the breast is reshaped, and the nipple is repositioned if necessary. A breast lift is often performed in combination to achieve a harmonious result. Most patients stay overnight in the clinic for observation.

We use scar-sparing techniques and self-dissolving sutures, so no stitch removal is required. Depending on the patient’s condition and desired result, the breast reduction can also be combined with a breast lift. The goal is always an aesthetic outcome that suits the patient’s body and leaves minimal visible scarring.

After the procedure, LIVION provides close follow-up care during the healing phase. Regular check-ups are scheduled in the first two weeks. Patients wear a supportive bra for about six weeks to support healing. Additionally, our scar care program is provided to optimize wound healing and ensure the scars are as inconspicuous as possible.

After a breast reduction, physical rest for at least two to three weeks is recommended. Most patients can return to work after seven to ten days. Sports and strenuous activities can usually be resumed after about six weeks.

Results are generally long-lasting. The first follow-up appointments occur within the first 14 days, and a supportive bra should be worn for approximately six weeks. Normal physical activity and sports are usually possible after six weeks.
