What is labial augmentation?
Intimate well-being and optimisation of the intimate area
The labia majora are the paired structures of skin and fatty tissue that surround the sensitive inner genital area. They serve an important protective and cushioning function for the vaginal opening and the clitoris. Sufficient volume contributes to both aesthetics and mechanical protection.
Labial augmentation is a minimally invasive procedure designed to add volume to specific areas. Depending on the individual’s initial condition and preferences, two tried-and-tested methods are used: labial augmentation with hyaluronic acid or volume enhancement using the patient’s own fat (lipofilling).
1. Injection with hyaluronic acid (temporary volume enhancement)
During hyaluronic acid injections, a hyaluronic acid filler specifically designed for the intimate area is carefully injected into the labia majora. The hyaluronic acid binds water, improves hydration and creates a softer, fuller appearance.
Advantages:
- outpatient treatment
- Performed under local anesthesia
- short procedure (approx. 30–45 minutes)
- Immediately visible result
This method is particularly suitable for patients who:
- desire a non-operative solution
- require a moderate volume
- Prefer a temporary result first.
The results generally last for around 6–12 months, depending on metabolism, skin quality and the amount of product used. A touch-up can easily be carried out.
2. Injection with autologous fat / lipofilling (longer-term solution)
Lipofilling involves the use of the patient’s own fat tissue. This is first carefully harvested (e.g. from the abdomen, hips or thighs), processed and then transplanted into the labia majora.
The extent of the procedure depends on the individual findings. If only a small amount of fat is to be removed, the procedure can be carried out under local anaesthetic. If, however, the procedure is combined with a more extensive liposuction, it is advisable to carry it out under general anaesthetic.
The treatment duration varies (approximately 60–90 minutes or longer for combined procedures).
Advantages of using your own fat:
- very natural fabric structure
- long-term result
- no foreign material
- Additional body contouring during combined liposuction
This method is particularly suitable for patients who:
- desire a long-term result
- need more volume
- I was planning to have liposuction anyway.
In the first few weeks, the body breaks down some of the transplanted fat. The remaining fat can become permanently established. If necessary, a second session may be advisable to achieve the best possible result.
